An Apple Watch that has come into contact with liquid requires specialist handling — even if the model is water resistant. MacLife has been rescuing Apple Watches of every series after water damage since 2007. Time matters: every minute increases the risk of corrosion.
Signs of water damage
- The watch won't turn on or charge
- The screen doesn't respond to touch
- Dark spots under the display, visible moisture in the sensors
- Distorted speaker or a microphone that doesn't work
- Heart rate / blood oxygen sensors stop working
What to do immediately
Do this
Turn the watch off (press and hold the side button), wipe it with a dry, soft cloth and contact MacLife as soon as possible.
Don't do this
Don't use a hair dryer, radiator or oven, don't put the watch in rice and don't try to charge a flooded watch.
Diagnostics and repair at MacLife
- Intake and assessment — which liquid, how long, what symptoms
- Disassembly — opening the case (requires precision and specialist tools)
- Cleaning — ultrasonic, neutralising corrosion and deposits
- Repair — replacing damaged components (battery, display, Digital Crown, speaker), where possible
- Testing — display, Digital Crown, charging, sensors, connectivity
Possible scenarios
All of the watch's functions are restored — the best outcome when you react quickly.
The main functions (display, sensors, notifications) work, although e.g. the speaker or microphone may remain limited. You decide whether to accept that scope.
After prolonged exposure to salt water or a serious short circuit, the damage can be irreversible. In that case we can offer a trade-in (buy-back for parts).
Health data
If the Apple Watch was paired with an iPhone, your health data (activity, workouts, heart rate measurements) is safely stored on the iPhone and in iCloud — it won't be lost even if the watch can't be repaired. If the watch was never synced, recovering the data from its local storage is very difficult.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to repair an Apple Watch after water damage?
The cost depends on the extent of the damage and any component replacements, which is why we quote individually after diagnostics — always before starting the repair. You'll find current rates in the Apple Watch service price list.
My Apple Watch is water resistant — why did it break after contact with water?
Water resistance decreases over time (the seals wear out) and doesn't protect against hot water, soap, perfume or chemicals. A drop can also compromise the seals, letting water get inside.
Will putting it in rice help?
No. Rice doesn't remove deposits or corrosion, and it only delays professional help while corrosion progresses. Turn the watch off, wipe it and get it to a service centre as soon as possible.
How long does a water damage repair take?
Usually a few business days — the time depends on the scope of cleaning, corrosion neutralisation and any component replacements. We serve all of Poland, also by courier.
