Cracked iPad Glass: What to Do and What It Costs

Cracked your iPad screen? Find out whether it's just the glass or a damaged panel, how much the repair costs, and how to choose a service that won't cost you True Tone or Apple Pencil support.

Published: 8 July 2026 · up-to-date prices always in the iPad service price list

In short (TL;DR)

A broken iPad screen doesn't always mean replacing the whole device. If touch and image still work, replacing just the glass (glass-only) is often enough — at MacLife from 350 zł. If the panel is damaged, the entire module has to be replaced (from approx. 700 zł). Apple doesn't repair — it swaps the device for a refurbished one, which costs from ~1469 zł. A specialised service (19 years of experience, original parts, free diagnostics) usually means 40–80% savings. Look for a service with at least a 12-month warranty and original parts, so you don't lose True Tone or Apple Pencil support.

Cracked glass or damaged display? Diagnostics

A cracked "glass" and a damaged display are not the same thing. The iPad screen consists of three layers:

  • Cover glass — cracks on impact. If the image is perfect and touch works, only this layer is damaged.
  • Digitizer (touch layer) — when the iPad doesn't respond to touch in part of the screen, or ghost touch (self-triggering taps) appears.
  • LCD/OLED panel — black spots, coloured stripes, a leaking image or no backlight. On iPad Pro with OLED (from M4 onwards), costs are higher.

How to check the extent of the damage yourself?

Image test

Turn on the iPad and display a uniform bright background (a white page). Check for spots, stripes or dead pixels.

Touch test

Drag an app icon across every corner of the screen. If the touch "cuts out" anywhere, the digitizer is damaged.

Check the frame

Run your finger along the edges. A bent frame or chips at the joints can make a glass-only repair impossible.

If in doubt, don't risk it — MacLife offers free diagnostics: in 15 minutes you'll know exactly what is damaged and what your options are.

What to do step by step after cracking your iPad?

Emergency checklist
  • Tape the screen — clear tape across the cracks protects your hand and prevents the glass from crumbling further.
  • Don't press or bend it — don't press the glass against the panel and don't put the iPad in a tight bag.
  • Make a backup — a backup in iCloud or via computer (PL), in case the module has to be replaced.
  • Turn off the device — if the touch allows it; you'll reduce the risk of a short circuit.
  • Don't pull out the shards — a yank can tear the cable connecting the display to the logic board.
  • Contact the service — describe the model and the extent of the damage; we'll advise a visit or a courier.

iPad screen repair — how much does it cost? 2026 price list

The cost depends on the model and where the repair is done. The table below compares replacement at an Apple authorized service (out of warranty) with an independent premium service like MacLife.

Apple doesn't repair screens — it swaps the whole device for a refurbished one. Up-to-date prices always in the iPad service price list. See also the full guide: iPad screen repair — where and for how much.

What affects the price?

  • Model and generation — the most expensive are iPad Pro models with OLED and ProMotion (120 Hz)
  • Screen assembly — in older models, cheaper glass-only refurbishment is possible; in newer ones it's often the whole module
  • Type of damage — the glass alone is cheaper than a panel plus a dented frame

How to choose a reliable service? Avoid these mistakes

Ads like "iPad repair from 199 zł" are tempting, but a low price usually means compromises that strip the device of its features.

Original parts vs replacements

Cheap replacements of unknown origin risk: losing True Tone, problems with Apple Pencil (lag, broken lines), lower brightness and colour fidelity, and no automatic brightness control. MacLife uses original parts — full display functionality is preserved.

Warranty — 12 months is the standard

An honest service gives at least 12 months of warranty. Hearing about 30 days? That's a sign the service doesn't trust its own work. MacLife provides a one-year warranty on all repairs.

Specialisation and convenience

Don't hand your iPad to a workshop that fixes "everything from washing machines to smartphones". MacLife has specialised exclusively in Apple for 19 years (professional iPad service), has served 70,000 companies and offers courier pickup from your home (PL).

Choose Apple when

The device is under warranty or AppleCare+, you want a refurbished unit and a replacement device in the meantime.

Choose MacLife when

The iPad is out of warranty, you want to keep your data (Apple erases it), and you care about price (40–80% savings) and original parts.

Most common problems after repair — and how to avoid them

  • Ghost touch — self-triggering taps caused by an imprecisely fitted digitizer
  • No True Tone / automatic brightness — the result of a non-original screen or faulty calibration
  • Housing not sealed — a detached seal, dust under the glass
  • Face ID problems — on iPad Pro the Face ID module cable is easy to damage

MacLife prevents all of this by using original parts, professional programmers to write the True Tone calibration onto the new module, and assembly in sterile conditions with proper seals. Our experience with the Face ID module makes the risk of damaging it practically zero.

Frequently asked questions

At a professional service like MacLife — no. Our technicians know how to safely disconnect and reconnect the Face ID module during a screen replacement, so the risk is minimal. Beware of random shops, though — it's one of the most common mishaps with iPad Pros.

We don't recommend it. The iPad screen is bonded with a strong structural adhesive and is a precise stack of layers. A DIY attempt usually ends in a damaged panel, torn cables or permanent housing damage — and the cost of such an experiment can be higher than a professional repair.

A glass-only repair usually takes 2–4 hours, and a full module replacement 1–2 business days — depending on the model and the extent of the damage. For urgent orders, we do our best to speed things up as much as possible.

No. Unlike Apple's procedure (which swaps the entire device and erases the data), MacLife repairs your specific unit — files, photos and settings stay. For safety, we still recommend making a backup beforehand.

At MacLife, glass-only refurbishment starts at 350 zł (e.g. iPad 9th gen), provided the panel and touch work fine. If the panel is also damaged, the entire module has to be replaced — from approx. 700 zł. We give the exact price after a free diagnosis.
