Apple Backup: How to Back Up iPhone, iPad and Mac Without Losing Data

iCloud, Time Machine, a local backup or a disk clone? We walk through the backup methods for iPhone, iPad and Mac — and show how MacLife protects your data before a repair.

Your photos, contacts, messages and documents are priceless. Before you hand your device over for repair, it is worth making a backup — it is an insurance policy for your data. At MacLife we do our utmost to make every repair safe, but with electronics it always pays to have your data secured, no matter how the repair goes.

Why a backup before a repair matters

Some repairs inherently touch the device's storage. A backup eliminates the risk in situations such as:

  • SSD or flash memory replacement — if diagnostics reveal a damaged drive
  • Logic board repair (e.g. after liquid damage) — where the memory controller may be at risk
  • Factory reset — required for certain system-level faults
  • Unforeseen events — a short circuit or power surge while working on the device

With an up-to-date backup, you can be sure that whatever happens during the repair, your data can be restored.

What does a backup protect?

iPhone and iPad

Photos and videos, contacts, calendars, SMS/iMessage messages and messengers (WhatsApp, Messenger), notes, app data, Keychain passwords, Health data, settings and home screen layout.

MacBook and iMac

The entire macOS system with apps and settings, documents, Photos library, music and movies, desktop, downloaded files, mail, contacts, calendars, Safari bookmarks and history.

iPhone and iPad backup methods

1. iCloud backup (cloud)

Convenient and automatic, available from anywhere, with easy restoration onto a new device. It requires enough iCloud storage (the free 5 GB is often not enough) and a solid internet connection.

2. Local backup (Finder / iTunes)

Very fast, needs no iCloud storage, covers more data and can be encrypted with a password. It is saved locally — it is worth moving it to an external drive.

3. Double backup (iCloud + local)

Two copies = maximum security. We recommend it when the data is particularly precious (e.g. a lifetime of photos, business documents).

MacBook and iMac backup methods

1. Time Machine

The backup system built into macOS. It creates a full, incremental copy on an external drive with file versioning. The best choice for most users.

2. Disk clone (bootable)

An exact copy of the entire drive that you can boot your Mac from. Instant restoration and business continuity in case of a failure. It requires a drive at least as large as the internal one.

3. Backup of selected folders

We copy only the data you indicate (Documents, Photos, Movies) to a drive, a flash drive or the cloud. Fast and cheaper when you do not need a copy of the whole system.

How we do backups at MacLife

Step by step
  • Consultation — we determine which data matters most and which method to choose
  • Creating the backup — iCloud, local, or both; we monitor the progress
  • Verification — we check that the backup can be restored (a backup that cannot be recovered is useless)
  • Documentation — where it is saved, date, size, scope and restore instructions
  • Repair — only after a successful backup
  • Restoration — if we replaced the drive or performed a reset, we restore your data from the backup

Cost and turnaround time

  • iPhone / iPad backup — from 50 zł
  • MacBook / iMac backup — from 100 zł (disk clone from 150 zł)
  • Double backup (iCloud + local) — from 80 zł
  • With a repair order, we often perform the backup free of charge or at a reduced price

The price does not include the storage medium — you can bring your own drive or buy one from us. Time: iPhone/iPad usually 30–90 minutes, MacBook/iMac from 1 to several hours (depending on the amount of data and the method). We provide an exact quote once the scope is agreed — see how the service intake works (PL).

Data security (GDPR)

  • Procedures compliant with GDPR
  • Only the assigned technician has access to your device
  • Optional password encryption of the backup — in that case, only you have access
  • After the repair and verification, temporary copies in our system are permanently deleted (multiple overwrites)

Living outside Warsaw? With our courier repair service (PL), we perform the backup as part of the order and transfer your data securely.

Frequently asked questions

In many repairs the data remains untouched, but some jobs (drive replacement, logic board repair, system reset) carry risk. A backup is a cheap insurance policy — we strongly recommend it before any service. At MacLife we can make it for you.

iCloud is convenient and automatic, but it requires cloud storage and a good internet connection. A local backup (Finder/iTunes, Time Machine) is faster, covers more data and can be encrypted. For precious data, a double backup is best — cloud plus a local copy.

iPhone/iPad backup from 50 zł, MacBook/iMac backup from 100 zł (disk clone from 150 zł), double backup from 80 zł. With a repair order we often perform it free of charge or at a reduced price. The price does not include the storage medium.

Yes. We operate in line with GDPR, only the assigned technician has access to the device, and the backup can be encrypted with a password. After the repair and verification, temporary copies in our system are permanently deleted via multiple overwrites.
