MacLife History: An Apple Service in Poland Since 2007

How conversations at a café table in 2007 grew into Poland's largest independent Apple service — with no loans, but with passion and our own technology.

2007: a café table for 6.50 zł

The year is 2007. Złote Tarasy in Warsaw, a café. At a table in the corner sits a young student, Krzysztof Nowakowski, talking with a customer about removing a SIM lock from a phone. The rent for the "office"? 6.50 zł — the price of a coffee. This is exactly where, in the centre of Warsaw, MacLife was born.

The story actually begins earlier, though — as a student, Krzysiek ran his first business in the Academic Incubators of Entrepreneurship, removing SIM locks and doing small repairs. He had no brick-and-mortar location; he met customers in a café where he even had "his" table. He was a technology enthusiast, active on forums — and it was there, on the MyApple forum, that fate introduced him to the person who would change everything.

On 9 January 2007, Steve Jobs unveiled the first iPhone. In Poland it was officially unavailable — units were imported from abroad, often SIM-locked. Demand for unlocking and repairs exploded overnight, and there were practically zero services that could do it.

The meeting that created MacLife

On the MyApple forum, Krzysiek came across a post by a user who had been one of the first people in Poland to remove an iPhone SIM lock using a hardware method. That was Jakub Łukowski — a technician working at the service desk of one of the Apple resellers. Krzysiek immediately saw the synergy: he had the customer contacts and sold SIM-unlock cards, while Kuba had the technical skills and service experience.

Their conversation showed that they thought alike. Kuba was unhappy with how customers were treated at the service where he worked — he felt it could be done better: honestly and professionally. "We decided to create the kind of service we would want to go to ourselves — one where the customer comes first," he recalls. They shook hands. MacLife had just been born.

The first "office" — a flat in Praga

After formally establishing the company in 2008, it was time to leave the café. The young business couldn't afford to rent commercial premises, though. The solution turned out to be Kuba's flat in Praga:

  • Living room = reception, where they served customers
  • Dining room = workshop, where equipment was repaired
  • Bedroom = still a bedroom, because Kuba lived there

They worked a dozen-plus hours a day — repairs, conversations with customers, ordering parts, marketing on forums, bookkeeping. Zero employees, just the two of them and a lot of passion. At a time when most services treated customers as an afterthought, MacLife focused on communication, transparency and quality. The result? A customer base that grew like an avalanche.

The first real service point

After a year and a half, the business had grown so much that continuing to operate from the flat became impossible. Krzysiek and Kuba rented their first real service premises — in Praga, on Łukowska Street. A real workshop, a real reception, professional conditions. "That was the moment we felt it was really working," Krzysiek recalls. They spent the next 3 years of intensive growth at Łukowska.

From the very beginning, the company was financed solely from their own savings — no loans, no investors. Every zloty of profit went back into the business: tools, better parts, development. "It was hard at the start, but thanks to that we never had the pressure of repaying debt. Every decision was ours."

2012: an EU grant and our own system

With scale came organisational challenges — communication between service points, tracking jobs, managing the team. In 2012, the company won an EU grant from the Innovative Economy Operational Programme (measure 8.2, "supporting the implementation of B2B e-business") to build its own intelligent service management system.

The result was a tailor-made solution that is still the heart of MacLife today. Among other things, the system:

  • recognises customers calling the helpline
  • connects them with the technician handling their job
  • tracks the status of every repair in real time
  • sends customers photos of the equipment before and after the repair
  • synchronises all service points across Poland

To this day, the competition relies on off-the-shelf systems with limitations. MacLife has its own — tailored to the specifics of Apple repairs.

MacLife today — a market leader

19 years after those conversations at café tables, MacLife is:

MacLife in numbers
  • 1200+ repairs a month — the most in Poland among independent services
  • 3 locations — Warsaw (Mokotów and Praga) and Poznań
  • A team of specialists with years of experience in microelectronics
  • Our own management system — unique in the country
  • Rated 4.8/5 on Google (800+ reviews); 99% of customers recommend us to their friends

MacLife also offers something rare on the market — a door-to-door courier service (PL) across Poland. You don't have to live in Warsaw or Poznań: you send the equipment by courier, we repair it and send it back.

Transparency and security

From the beginning, the foundation has been customer trust. Hence practices that are standard at MacLife but still rare in the industry: photos of the equipment before and after the repair, full documentation on the job card, and securing the SIM card assigned to the job number.

Philosophy: the customer comes first

Krzysiek and Kuba are in the business every day — not as absent owners, but as people who talk to customers, supervise repairs and develop the technology. Their advice to future entrepreneurs is simple:

"Don't start a business thinking you want to sell it. Above all, do what you like and love. Learn from others, but be yourself."

It is this philosophy — combined with conservative financing, reinvesting profits, and gradual, sustainable growth — that has allowed MacLife to survive 19 years on the market and become its leader.

Frequently asked questions

The beginnings go back to 2007 — to conversations with customers at a café table in Złote Tarasy. Formally, the company was established in 2008. Today MacLife is the largest independent Apple service in Poland, with 19 years of experience.

MacLife was founded by Krzysztof Nowakowski and Jakub Łukowski, who met on the MyApple forum. Krzysiek was responsible for customer contact and development, Kuba — for the technical side. Both remain actively involved in running the company to this day.

Over 1200 repairs a month — the most in Poland among independent Apple services. The company operates in three locations (Warsaw Mokotów, Warsaw Praga, Poznań) and serves all of Poland through its courier service.

An exclusive focus on Apple, our own job management system (co-financed by an EU grant in 2012), component-level mainboard repairs, a 12-month warranty, and full transparency — photos before and after the repair, documentation, and an estimate approved before work begins.
