MacBook Won't Turn On? 5 Causes and What to Do

Black screen, no response, or fans spinning at full speed with no image? Learn the 5 most common causes, work through 7 self-diagnosis steps and find out where to get a free MacBook diagnosis.

You sit down to work, press the power button – and nothing. Black screen, zero response, complete silence. Or you can hear the fans spinning at full speed, but no image appears on the display. MacBook startup problems are one of the most common situations in which Apple owners end up at a Mac service centre – and for good reason: the "won't turn on" symptom can mean anything from a trivial flat battery to a serious short circuit on the logic board.

In this guide we'll walk you through the most common causes of failure, show you what you can check yourself, and point you to where you can get a free MacBook diagnosis – whether you have an older Intel model or the latest machine with an M4 chip.

In short (TL;DR)

A MacBook may fail to respond for five main reasons: a worn-out battery or damaged power adapter (~40% of cases), a logic board failure (~20%), software problems (bootloop after an update), a damaged SSD (folder with a question mark) or a damaged display / Flexgate cable (black screen, but you can hear the fans). Before handing the laptop in for service, work through 7 simple steps: check the power supply, force a restart, disconnect accessories, reset the SMC and NVRAM, boot into safe mode and check the disk in Disk Utility. If that doesn't help – take advantage of a free basic diagnosis at MacLife (Poznań, Warsaw Mokotów, Warsaw Praga, or door-to-door courier). MacLife has been operating since 2007, performs component-level repairs, uses original parts and provides a 12-month warranty.

The 5 most common causes of MacBook failure

Workshops specialising in MacBook repair have observed a similar distribution of faults for years. Below we describe the five most common scenarios along with their characteristic symptoms. Knowing them, you'll quickly assess whether you can do something yourself or need a specialist's help.

1. Battery or power supply (~40% of cases)

This is the most common cause – statistically it accounts for around 40% of service requests. The symptoms speak for themselves:

  • The MacBook shows no response at all after pressing the power button – no sound, no LED on the charger (in models with MagSafe).
  • The MacBook only works when connected to the power adapter and shuts down immediately after the cable is unplugged.
  • The battery is swollen – the trackpad stops clicking, the enclosure bulges at the bottom, or you can see bulges around the top cover.
  • The LEDs on the charger don't light up or flash irregularly.

"No response" in MacBooks with Intel processors (especially older models) can mean the battery is deeply discharged – in that case an SMC reset helps (covered further below). In Apple Silicon models (M1, M2, M3, M4, M5) the power system works differently, but a worn-out battery still needs replacing.

When to go to a service centre? If the battery is swollen, stop using the laptop immediately – continued charging creates a fire risk. If the MacBook still won't turn on after connecting a known-good power adapter, a professional diagnosis is necessary – the cause may lie deeper, in the power management circuitry on the logic board.

2. Logic board failure (~20%)

About 20% of no-boot cases result from logic board damage. The logic board in a MacBook is an extremely complex assembly – it can fail as a result of:

  • a power surge in the mains – e.g. after a thunderstorm or after connecting a cheap, non-original power adapter,
  • liquid damage – even a small amount of liquid spilled near the keyboard can cause a short circuit and corrosion,
  • a short circuit caused by cheap USB-C accessories – low-quality hubs or chargers can damage the USB-C/Thunderbolt controllers.

Symptoms: the MacBook doesn't respond at all, the fans don't spin, the LEDs on the board don't light up. In some cases the laptop tries to start, but shuts down after a few seconds.

MacLife specialises in component-level repair – replacing individual damaged components on the logic board instead of an expensive replacement of the whole board. It's a decidedly cheaper solution, but it requires experience and proper diagnostic equipment. Don't try to solder or heat the logic board yourself – you risk permanently destroying the laptop.

3. Software problems – bootloop after a macOS update

The MacBook starts, the Apple logo appears, but after a moment the computer restarts again and the cycle repeats. This is a classic bootloop – a restart loop. The most common causes:

  • an interrupted macOS update installation (e.g. powering off the laptop mid-update),
  • corrupted system files,
  • a conflict with kernel extensions – usually after installing low-level applications.

In most cases a bootloop can be resolved without data loss – simply boot the MacBook into Recovery mode and repair the system or restore it from a Time Machine backup. If those methods don't work, a clean installation of macOS may be necessary, which involves losing the data on the disk.

4. Damaged SSD – folder with a question mark

If at startup you see a folder icon with a flashing question mark (?) on the screen – it means the system can't find the startup disk or the disk is faulty. The folder with a question mark can appear for several reasons:

  • physical damage to the SSD – failure of the controller or the NAND chips,
  • damage to the cable connecting the disk to the logic board (common in older 13″ MacBook Pro models from 2016–2017),
  • accidental deletion of the system partition or a change to the startup disk settings.

In Apple Silicon models the SSD is soldered to the logic board, so repairing or replacing it requires specialist equipment. In Intel MacBooks (up to 2019) the disk could be replaced with a new one, but newer models with T2 chips also have a soldered disk.

5. Display or Flexgate cable failure – black screen, but you can hear the fans

Here's the situation: the MacBook seems to start – you can hear the fans, the keyboard backlight works, you hear the startup chime – but the screen stays black. This is a classic symptom of a problem with the display or the signal cable.

In MacBook Pro models from 2016–2019 (the so-called Flexgate), the cable connecting the display to the logic board was too short – after repeated opening and closing of the laptop it would fray and crack. Apple ran a repair programme for years, but it covered only selected models and only for a limited time.

How to tell a display failure apart from a logic board failure? Shine a torch at the screen at an angle – if you can see a faint image (a so-called ghost image), the problem lies with the backlight or the cable. If the screen is completely black despite the torch – it could be damage to the display, the cable, or even the graphics circuitry on the logic board.

What can you check yourself? A step-by-step guide

Before sending your MacBook to an Apple service centre in Warsaw or any other point, work through 7 simple steps. In many cases they'll let you start the laptop without a visit to a specialist.

Step 1: Check the power supply

Connect the laptop to the original power adapter. Make sure the MagSafe or USB-C cable is firmly plugged in at both ends. Check whether the LED on the charger lights up – if not, try connecting another known-good adapter. Often the problem is a damaged cable or charger, not the MacBook itself.

Step 2: Force a restart

Press and hold the power button (Touch ID/Touch Bar on newer models) for 10–15 seconds until the computer shuts down completely. Wait 5 seconds and press it again to start the MacBook.

Step 3: Disconnect all accessories

Disconnect all attached devices: USB-C hubs, mice, keyboards, external monitors, SD cards. Any of them can cause a short circuit or a conflict. After disconnecting, try starting the laptop again.

Step 4: Reset the SMC (System Management Controller)

The SMC manages the power supply, the battery, the fans and the sensors. The SMC reset works differently depending on the processor:

MacBook type How to reset the SMC
Apple Silicon (M1–M5) Simply shut down the MacBook, wait 30 seconds and turn it on again. The SMC resets automatically.
Intel with T2 chip (2018–2020) Press and hold left Shift + Control + Option + the power button for 7 seconds. Release all keys and turn on the MacBook.
Intel without T2 (before 2018) Press and hold left Shift + Control + Option + the power button for 10 seconds. Release all keys and turn on the MacBook.

Step 5: Reset NVRAM/PRAM (Intel only)

NVRAM stores settings such as volume, screen resolution and time zone. To reset it: turn on the MacBook and immediately press and hold Command + Option + P + R for about 20 seconds. Release the keys after the second startup chime (or after about 20 seconds on MacBooks without a startup speaker).

Step 6: Boot into safe mode

Safe mode loads only the essential drivers and software, which lets you rule out problematic extensions.

  • Intel: hold the Shift key at startup.
  • Apple Silicon: press and hold the power button until you see the startup options → select the disk → press and hold Shift → click "Continue in Safe Mode".

If the MacBook starts in safe mode, the problem lies with the software – it's worth uninstalling recently added applications or extensions.

Step 7: Launch Disk Utility → First Aid

Enter Recovery mode:

  • Intel: Command + R at startup.
  • Apple Silicon: press and hold the power button → Options → Continue.

Select Disk Utility, choose the main disk (usually "Macintosh HD"), click First Aid and run the scan. The tool will repair any file system errors.

When to send your MacBook in for service? Warning signs

Self-diagnosis has its limits. If any of the symptoms below occur, don't delay your visit to a service centre:

  • Liquid damage – even if the laptop worked for a few hours after the spill, corrosion progresses hidden from view. The sooner it reaches a workshop, the better the chance of saving the logic board.
  • Swollen battery – bulging around the trackpad or the bottom enclosure. Risk of fire and damage to other components.
  • Visible mechanical damage – a cracked enclosure, dents, damaged ports.
  • Strange sounds – crackling, buzzing or metallic noises from inside the laptop.
  • No response to all the steps above – if after following the instructions the MacBook still won't turn on, the cause lies in a damaged component.

Frequently asked questions

The cost of a logic board repair starts at 300–400 PLN and depends on the extent of the damage. MacLife performs component-level repairs – replacing only the damaged chips, not the whole board, which significantly lowers the cost. You'll get an exact quote after the logic board diagnosis, which costs 349 PLN. The basic diagnosis is free, but general. A logic board repair is usually less than 50% of the cost of buying a new logic board at Apple.

Yes, in most cases it is – provided the laptop reaches the workshop quickly. The longer the liquid stays inside the laptop, the greater the risk of irreversible corrosion. Cleaning after liquid damage starts at 349 PLN, and a full repair from 300 PLN. Compared with the price of a new MacBook (from several to a dozen-plus thousand zloty), it's a worthwhile investment.

MacLife places great importance on customer data security. Where possible, the data on the disk remains untouched – the workshop does not format the disk without the user's explicit consent. In the event of an SSD failure, MacLife offers a data recovery service. It's always worth making regular backups (Time Machine or iCloud), though, so you can rest easy about your files.
